RAZZ Pride Icons: Jane Heap and Margaret Anderson

Jane Heap and Margaret Anderson were co-editors of The Little Review, founded in 1914, and instrumental in introducing modernism to America. The co-editors were also lovers, living in New York’s Greenwich Village and participating in local lesbian circles. The Little Review featured lesbian writers such as Amy Lowell and Djuna Barnes, as well as regular contributions from Sherwood Anderson, Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, and William Carlos Williams.

The publication is most infamous for its serialisation of James Joyce’s Ulysses. Its publication led to the magazine’s offices being raided due to the “obscenity” in Ulysses and the Society for the Prevention of Vice had Heap and Anderson indicted. The couple were found guilty of publishing indecent matter and fined $50 each.

After the court case, funds started to dwindle and Anderson and Heap’s relationship started to break down. They moved to Paris separately but did join the lesbian literary scene together (members including Gertrude Stein, Natalie Barney, and Janet Flanner) and collaborated on sporadic issues of The Little Review in Exile, the last issue being published in 1929.

Heap died in London in 1964, and Anderson died in 1973. Their contributions to the modernism movement have been largely academically recognised, however their inclusion of queer content has been ultimately dismissed. Anderson even wrote a novella called Forbidden Fires, that explored lesbian relationships in a semi-autobiographical manner. The book was finished in the 1950s but was not published until 1996, long after her death.
