RAZZ Pride Icons: Brenda Howard

Brenda Howard was a bisexual, polyamorous, LGBTQ+ activist. In a movement that sadly has a tendency to erase bisexual people, Brenda Howard led a fierce fight for bisexual people and helped her LGBTQ+ peers admirably. Most notably, she coordinated a rally to commemorate the first anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, AKA the first ever Pride march. Otherwise known as the “Mother of Pride”,  she helped evolve the march into Pride Day, and then into Pride Month.

Brenda Howard was also an active member in several organisations, including the Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights, ACT Up, and Queer Nation. Due to these organisations not meeting the needs of bisexual people however, Howard co-founded the New York Area Bisexual Network in 1987 to help coordinate services specifically designed for the region’s bisexual community.

Howard lost a long battle with cancer on 28th June 2005 – the date of the Stonewall Riots 36th anniversary.
