But I’m A Cheerleader is a delicious romantic comedy where Natasha Lyonne stars as Megan Bloomfield, a high school cheerleader whose parents try to cure her lesbianism by sending her to a conversion therapy camp. Conversion therapy is often a very dark topic for LGBTQ+ films and understandably so. What this movie gets right though is laughing at the bigot whose reasons for conversion therapy are unfounded and ridiculous while not making light of a deeply traumatic and abusive practice. Pastel pink and blue aesthetics reign supreme in this queer reclamation that sticks to the romantic comedy narrative – finally, the lesbian love story does not have to end in tragedy. It’s just been added to Amazon Prime if you have an account and you may spot a RuPaul in the cast.
