Halloween Best Bakes: Spooky Gooey Cookies

Happy Halloweeeeen! I love this time of year and so does my sweet tooth. As the world turns darker and colder, I am reminded of my childhood days of scuttling door to door, filling my pumpkin with as much sugar as possible. This year, however, we won’t be doing this for one sensible reason: we are in a global pandemic. Instead, I’ll be at home enjoying my chocolate cookies with a melted centre and green slime for the horror effect. This recipe is truly to DIE for.


  • 215g of unsalted butter
  • 150g of Muscovado sugar
  • 50g granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp of milk
  • 1 tbsp of vanilla extract
  • Green food dye
  • 215g plain flour
  • 25g cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp of baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • Any funky flavour chocolate of your choice (I used Oreo Cadubury)


  1. Pre-heat your oven to 160 degrees
  2. Put 215g of softened butter into a bowl with 50g of white caster sugar and 150g of light brown Muscovado sugar
  3. Mix using an electric whisk
  4. Add 1 egg, a splash of milk, and a splash of vanilla extract and give it another blitz
  5. Add (sieved) plain flour, (sieved) cocoa-powder, baking powder, salt and whisk again
  6. Cover with cling film and put in the fridge for 10-20 minutes
  7. Once out of the fridge place some flour into a bowl and with the mixture and flour in your hands (it’s a sticky mixture) roll into small balls: about the size of a baby’s fist.
  8. Press a piece of chocolate into the centre of the ball and continue to roll in your hands until the mixture envelopes the chocolate and then place on a baking tray with a sheet of baking paper
  9. Pop these into the fridge for another 10 minutes (this will stop the cookies from spreading too much in the oven and keep them gooey)
  10. Put your trays of cookies into the oven for 12 minutes and remember that they will keep cooking once they are out
  11. While they are cooking place white chocolate into a heat proof bowl above gently simmering water and continually mix the chocolate. Once it has melted add green food colouring and with a spoon drizzle the chocolate over the cool cookies for your desired effect.
