Singles’ Round Up: ‘As It Was’ by Harry Styles

If Harry Styles’ last record was “about having sex and feeling sad,” the very same sentiment could be used to describe ‘As It Was,’ written by Styles alongside his skilled collaborators Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson, who both produced the track, and moving into “eighties-style synth-pop, in the vein of A-Ha or Depeche Mode.”

“It’s not the same as it was” gives the impression that the song is about the failure of a relationship, an idea that is reinforced by the video, which shows Styles literally running in circles. Equally, the main chorus line could be more of a declaration of love – that amazing, even frightening second where you notice your life is changed, when being in love forces you to tackle a little of your own baggage, to confront the feelings you normally conceal. In either case, ‘As It Was’ is one of Styles’ very best.
