It has been a year of actively avoiding physical touch. When we walk through the supermarket we duck and dodge the elderly ladies with inexplicable death wishes, we cringingly recoil from welcoming hugs offered by old (and apparently stupid) friends, and, like Lady Macbeth, we relentlessly scrub at the library desk before we sit down to prevent touching others by proxy. Review: ‘The Last Man on Earth’ by Wolf Alice

Wolf Alice are masters of evolution. ‘The Last Man on Earth’is the first single off their upcoming album Blue Weekend, and it offers a promising insight into the band’s new chapter. It arrives almost four years since the release of their sophomore album. But still, Wolf Alice maintains the signature magic and mastery of their prior projects. With nods to past British pop-rock icons in their gripping chord progressions, with a Bowie-esque bridge in the second half, the band transforms this intimate piano ballad into a beaming, string-filled anthem. Lead-singer Ellie Rowsell muses introspective lyrics centred on the selfish nature of humans, which make you cry one listen and laugh the next. Singles’ Round-Up: ‘Just Friends’ by Max Pope

‘Just Friends’ is the first single from Max Pope’s upcoming EP, In Limbo. A fusion of jazz/pop/funk/soul, Max Pope’s sound feels fresh and interesting, with a beautifully subtle groove in all of his work. He is easily comparable with Tom Misch, but I’d say Max holds a distinct sound himself. The guitar and bass melodies in this track carry divine funk and marry perfectly with a simple but wonderfully smooth beat, producing a song perfect to walk down the street to. Max is also a super talented lyricist, with this track focusing on anxiety around change and feeling like you have a lack of control over relationships.
