This summer was the first occasion we could begin to relax from the pandemic by going out and experiencing social life thanks to eased restrictions. This opportunity comes with many expectations and challenges. During lockdown many people turned to junk food for comfort, sacrificing physical activity with the excuse it would not have mattered this year, or believing there would have been time to make up for the indulgences. The social expectation of displaying a perfect body in summer resulted in many people taking quick fixes to shrink their figure or alter their appearance. Furthermore, going back to normality and enjoying other people’s company can constitute a challenge in itself, inducing people to either search for human contact in potentially unsafe ways, or alternatively remaining inside despite the ease of the government’s measures. In lieu of an exciting European holiday this summer, I have been reminiscing about holidays past. Perhaps one of my fondest memories comes from the summer of 2018 when, buzzing with post-exam results potential, I went to Italy with three of my oldest friends. Refreshing drinks are the perfect accompaniment for all this glorious weather. Although you could fall back on classics like Pimm’s or pints of cider, sometimes something lighter and non-alcoholic is needed. After all, it’s nice to spend a day dossing in the sun without the soporific haze of day drinking. So here is a selection of non-alcoholic drinks perfect for sultry afternoons. Shrub Syrup: A … Continue reading A Taste of Summer: Light and Refreshing Drinks Recipes
I don’t always choose red wine. Red wine sinks, and makes a barrel of my body. It turns my purple eyelids heavy, and my pink tongue, purple. I drink a glass in the garden and watch the cracks in the patio or the pegs on the line: the ones that are so old that opening breaks them, belonging to tenants long-gone.
Sometimes white wine wins. It is strong and acidic, demanding the drinker to stay alert. White wine matches white blossoms, which match dinner in the garden, which matches white wine. Pollen tickles the inside of the nose and bees hum upon a bed of weeds, the one littered with dead bluebells. Continue reading The Life Chronicles: I Don’t Like Cider
Reading this extraordinarily perceptive novel in my garden during the July heat wave, the cover gradually fading in the sunlight and the pages getting crumpled by my fingers greasy with sun cream, I was absorbed into the world of Penelope Lively’s book: one simmering with barely contained emotions and the heat of an extreme English summertime. At just under 200 pages this book is no … Continue reading Review: Heat Wave by Penelope Lively
Short trousers, redcurrants, summer rain, campsites, tears, electric hand mixers, intelligence, ice cubes, skin and plums. These are some of the objects and phenomena that Norwegian author, Karl Ove Knausgård describes in his book, Summer. Continue reading So Scandi: In praise of “Summer” by Karl Ove Knausgård
Recently, I spent a few days on holiday with my boyfriend in Dublin. It was the first time either of us had been abroad without any kind of responsible adults, and we’d opted to take three trains and a ferry rather than fly. Our journey there was long, complete with an overnight stop in Holyhead, but once we got off the shuttle bus in the … Continue reading Postcards From Abroad: Dublin
Social media has become a performative space. It presents a platform that allows us to display a photogenic version of our lives to the world. This perpetuates in the summer as our news feeds become crammed with everyone’s holiday shots, rather than the grim summer jobs that help us afford them. But should we be ashamed of this? Or is it just a natural human … Continue reading Putting your best foot forward or faking it: are we too critical of Instagram’s glamorization of summer?
