“I just want to cry,” I said to my housemate the night after a Big One. I couldn’t understand it. A great night, more raucous behaviour than you can shake a stick at, and there I was exhausted, anxious, and miserable. I slobbed about in my pyjamas from bed to kitchen to bed again, tentatively eating some stale Doritos in the hope that they would soak up some of the vodka swishing around my stomach and cheer me up, to no avail. Ever since I was young, I realised that women were subject to different rules and expectations to men. In secondary school, this was exasperated. When I was in year eight and most of our teachers were on strike, remaining members of staff had the girls undergo a self-defence class. It was boring. The boys, on the other hand, went to play football. When I was sixteen, I was walking home, covered in mud from a trek in the countryside, and two grown men catcalled me from their car. When I was in Sixth Form, we had an assembly in which our teachers scare-mongered us about the dangers of sending photos of an explicit nature online. I recall a few times when photos were leaked, where the women received backlash from their peers and the men who leaked them got off Scott-free. And throughout my time at school, I was slapped by the hands of too many men, pushed about, and had my wrists and arms twisted, even as I approached and entered adulthood. The 1st to the 5th March is this year’s Sustainability Week, an annual event that emphasises the importance of making sustainable choices. However, there is one thing that sets this year’s Sustainability Week apart from similar efforts that have been made in previous years: the Societies Sustainability Alliance. At present, this Alliance is comprised of 17 different societies which, collectively and in collaboration with university staff, aim to “improve representation from societies and groups in discussion and decision-making regarding sustainability at the University of Exeter” (Societies Sustainability Alliance Terms of Reference). The member societies range from those that already have a distinct environmental focus, such as Be The Change, to those that have a more academic focus, such as the Exeter Law Society. I interviewed Siân Docksey prior to the salon to ask her how she found out about this unique, yet fascinating opportunity, to which she replied, “way back in March when the world set on fire and everything just disintegrated in front of us, I lost all of my gigs. I was on a writer’s weekly mail out and there was an advert for joining a Creative Fellowship at the University”. After questioning whether being a ‘Fellow’ involved “[walking] around in a cravat [tipping your] hat at people”, she soon discovered that the University of Exeter’s Arts and Culture team recruits three Creative Fellows a year, who work with academics to enhance their area of research. So, “it’s a bit like speed dating,” Siân noted, laughing. As if by fate, Siân was partnered with Dr Ina Linge, an expert in “The Politics of Sexual Nature”. As term one is now in full swing, RAZZ would like to take this opportunity to look back at the much needed and valuable anti-racism work that students and societies at Exeter carried out over the summer period. Over the course of lockdown, many varied and dynamic societies performed important work that RAZZ believes is important to reflect on. We would like to use this termly article as a space where we can bring together and collate the anti-racist work occurring across many varied groups and societies at the University. Whilst we have advertised this space as a place where campaigns and projects dedicated to this movement can be highlighted, we acknowledge this is by no means a comprehensive list. If you or your society are curating a project, launching a campaign or just speaking up in any way about the systemic injustices wrought on our communities by institutional racism, we want to hear about it. Please email razzmag@gmail.com with information about your campaign, we will publicise it on our social media platforms and will document and reflect on the work that has been done at the end of term one in the next Anti-Racism@Exeter article. Having these discussions and endeavouring to diversify our community is something we should all be passionate about at Exeter, and we hope you will be inspired by the work of these groups and get involved with this movement yourselves in whatever way you can. From 25 November to 4 December, members of the UCU will be striking. This isn’t just your lecturers, but also librarians, IT and administration professionals who are taking part. They are striking on a variety of issues, including the topic of pension that led to strike action back in 2018. However, the strike action is also over falling pay, the gender and ethnic pay gap, precarious employment practices, and unsafe workloads. I understand that some students may have to attend classes due to pressures surrounding compulsory contact hours, personal wellbeing, and international student requirements. However, if you are in a privileged position and wish to support University staff on strike, here is some more information on how to show solidarity.

Exam season is looming over us already, and with deadlines creeping closer it means that the library is always jam–packed with stressed students trying to cram their minds with vital information. Unless you manage to get to the library at the break of dawn it is nearly impossible to get a seat. However, it is not just the library; pretty much every square inch of campus is full of students, leaving people at a loss to find revision space.
